Screening Test in SSB
The Screening Test at the SSB (Services screening Board) is the first stage of the screening process for individuals interested in joining the Indian Armed Forces. It is used as a preliminary screening to exclude applicants who do not fulfill the necessary psychological and physical requirements. The screening procedure is intended to examine the applicants’ fundamental traits and ability before they proceed to more elaborate and intensive testing.
The screening exam is normally administered on the first day of the SSB interview and comprises of two major components: the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) exam and the Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT).
1. Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test
This written exam assesses the candidate’s fundamental intellect, reasoning ability, and problem-solving abilities. It tests both verbal and nonverbal reasoning by asking a series of questions on logical thinking, analytical abilities, and pattern recognition.
- Verbal reasoning: This section covers topics about analogy, categorization, series, coding-decoding, and direction sense, among others.
- Non-verbal reasoning: This section focuses on pattern completion, series completion, and other visual puzzles.
Candidates are often given a specific amount of time to answer questions, which vary in complexity.
2. Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT)
The PPDT is intended to evaluate a candidate’s psychological characteristics, including creativity, imagination, and communication abilities. The exam is broken into two sections.
a. Picture Perception
- The applicant is presented a hazy image for around 30 seconds. The image may comprise several figures or be fairly abstract, making it difficult to understand at first look.
- The candidate’s objective is to determine the number of characters in the image and evaluate the scenario. The image might be a scene displaying an activity, a gathering of people, or an event.
b. Picture Description
- After seeing the image, the applicant is given four minutes to compose a short tale based on it. The tale should include the following:
- Character(s): What are the ages and genders of the persons in the picture?
- Situation: What is occurring on the scene?
- Mood: Is the situation favorable, bad, or neutral?
- Outcome: What is the probable outcome of the scenario?
Candidates are urged to write a tale that is uplifting, clear, and relevant to real-life events. It should not be too dramatic or absurd.
c. Group Discussion
- Following the individual writing, the applicants are broken into small groups and instructed to debate the image they experienced. The conversation assesses applicants’ ability to communicate, articulate their ideas, and interact with others.
- This phase assesses group conduct, thinking clarity, leadership qualities, and the capacity to engage in conversations.

Screening Results
After these tests are finished, the SSB panel analyzes the findings. Only those who match the requirements in both the OIR and PPDT are invited to proceed to the Psychological Tests, Group Testing Officer (GTO) duties, and Personal Interview.

Although this is just the first phase in a multi-day selection process, applicants who pass the screening exam will advance to more difficult rounds that assess many parts of their personality, such as leadership potential, physical endurance, and psychological stability.
